What we do
We have developed a wide range of products and techniques to cope with different current measurement situations and can easily modify these for special requirements. Our aim is to promote the use of Rogowski coils; we appreciate that this technology can be new even to experienced electrical engineers. We try to understand specific current-measurement applications and provide the best solution. A detailed knowledge of the Rogowski coil means that we can work out specific measuring requirements that are tailor made for each of our customers' requirements, in a diverse number of industries. All of our products are made to order and are therefore customer-specific. We have manufacturing capability from developing prototypes to large production runs.
A versatile measuring system with many applications
Rogowski coil current transducers measure alternating currents in a frequency range from less than 0.1Hz to several hundreds of kHz. Their measurement range is impressive, ranging from a few milliamps to over 1 million amps.
A Rogowski coil is ‘linear’, it does not saturate and the mutual inductance between the coil and the conductor is independent of the current. Many of its useful features result from this linearity. It has a wide dynamic range so that the same coil can be used to measure both very small and very large currents.
Calibration is easier because the coil may be calibrated at any convenient current level and the calibration will be accurate for all currents including very large ones.
Coils can be built which are very compact and can be fitted in confined spaces, hence very useful for retro-fit applications.
We've made coils that are measured in millimetres and coils that fit around wind turbines, coils that measure lightning striking aircraft parts and coils that find the break in a railway line. The applications are many and varied.
Custom made with flexibility in mind
A project starts with a customer’s requirements to see what we can do to meet them. We try to understand what the customer is trying to achieve so that we can provide the best solution rather than supplying the nearest item 'off the shelf'. If we think a Rogowski coil is not suitable we will say so.
Our expertise can solve problems from measuring extremely large currents, providing a measuring coil to fit in a restricted space, or to meet certain environmental conditions. We can modify integrators and coils for any current required rather than only provide a standard product. We take for granted that customers can order any length of flexible coil, and any quantity, and they do.
We wrote the book...
David Ward has been developing solutions to measurement problems since the 1970’s. His early work within the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) led to his interest in the Rogowski coil as a powerful technique for studying overheating problems in large generators. He designed a calibration system that makes best use of the coils. While recognising that a Rogowski coil is still unfamiliar to many engineers, he is trying to remove the mystery, readily documenting what he knows.
